About the School of Nursing

The University of Virginia School of Nursing is a national leader in nursing education with a firm commitment to clinical excellence, robust research and evidence based practice, and to cultivating leadership in students and faculty. The School is part of a campus steeped in tradition with World Heritage architectural treasures. Growing international programs offer our diverse faculty and student body fresh opportunities for study and research. A developing interprofessional education program already is teaming nursing and medical students in the classroom, in simulation exercises, and in clinical experiences. The School is recognized for its rural health care research and programs and is home to one of the few dedicated nursing history centers in the United States. Other research strengths include complementary and alternative therapies with emerging strength in geriatrics and oncology.

The medical school Thomas Jefferson established in 1825 as the nation’s 10th has grown to become a renowned academic health system. The School of Nursing, founded in 1901 at the same time as the Medical Center, is part of the UVA Health System along with the School of Medicine, the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, the Health Services Foundation, and the Medical Center. The hospital boasts Magnet designation and has consistently rated high marks in national rankings. The Medical Center is actually an integrated network of primary and specialty care services ranging from wellness programs to the most technologically advanced care. At its hub is a 577-bed hospital, designated a state Level 1 trauma center. Extensive expansion has been under way to add a new clinical oncology treatment facility, children’s hospital and a long term acute care facility.

Charlottesville, Virginia

Situated in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville is a sophisticated small city with small town flavor only an hour from the state capital in Richmond and about 2 hours from Washington, DC. Numerous national rankings in recent years have recognized its charms rating it as a “best place to live.” Direct flights, rail and bus links, and interstate highways link Charlottesville to major cities. Once home to three founding father Presidents (#3 Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, #4 James Madison at Montpelier, and #5 James Monroe at Ashlawn-Highlands), the City also claims two World Heritage sites: Monticello and the University of Virginia. Outdoor lovers will find many recreation options in the area. Home of the Dave Matthews Band, the area’s cultural events include annual book and film festivals, the Charlottesville University Symphony Orchestra, opera, bluegrass, live theater and a broad spectrum of entertainment offerings at the John Paul Jones Arena.
